Gambling

Sunday 4 September 2016

Gambling is the wagering of money or something of value on an event (a football match, for example) with an uncertain outcome in order to win money or other material goods. There are many types of gambling - casino games, table games, electronic games, card games, carnival games, dice-based games, coin-tossing, keno, bingo, and sports betting. It is a very risky business as one day you may win a huge amount of money and lose even more on the next one. However, there are people that are able to live off of betting.
The idea of betting money on sports and lottery games originates from medieval and ancient Europe and Asia. Religious perspectives on this subject have always been mixed. Some Jewish authorities disqualified professional gamblers from testifying in court while people from Hindu religion were very into taxation of gambling controlled by the state.
Although many studies show that many people participate in gambling as a form of recreation or to gain an income, it can be really harmful and addictive and, therefore, lead to serious problems and diseases, such as depression. Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a gambler with serious problems himself, suggests that Russians may have natural attraction to gambling, and the association between Russians and gambling made the legends of Russian roulette known all over the world.
